I had a hard time picking the first film I wanted to talk about.
Merry Christmas, Mr.Lawrence (Senjō no Merī Kurisumasu in the original), 1983, directed by Nagisa Oshima.
What? Based on the memoirs of British soldier Laurent Van der Post as a war prisoner in a Japanese prison-camp in Indonesia Merry Christmas, Mr.Lawrence deals with the relationship between four men: two British prisoners, the Japanophile John Lawrence and the rebellious and beautiful Jack Celliers, and the Japanese officers commanding the camp, the ultrapatriotic Captain Yonoi and the seemingly easygoing Sergeant Hara.
Warnings: Some quite disturbing violent content, including maltreatment and torture of prisoners of war, executions and ritualized suicide.
( Now there's me ranting a lot, sometimes about things that don't have that much to do with the film )
Availability: Merry Christmas, Mr.Lawrence (or Furyo as it was known in some countries) is available on dvd or bluray worldwide. And there's the beautiful Criterion edition with a new high-definition transfer, which I covet more than anything in the world. Damn you, USA, you and your Criterion editions.
Recommended reading: For a really awesome investigation on the theme of seppuku and the death of Yukio Mishima try Christopher Ross' Mishima's Sword (published in the UK by Harper Collins). An informative and absurdly entertaining read.

{Take the 100 Things challenge!}
I've decided to commit to the 100 things blogging challenge, which is an awesome idea because I feel that fandom doesn't talk about things at length anymore and this is a great chance for livejournal people to do what they do best: rant a lot about things they love/hate.
My theme: 100 Japanese Films. Why I've picked this? 1) It's a subject matter I am relatively knowledgeable in and passionate about and I have a bit of theory ground to stand upon (I took specialized courses and had to write papers about it in college and that doesn't make me an expert of course but I enjoyed it a lot) and also many of my favourite films ever are Japanese films and it's a subject wide enough yet particular enough to be able to cover a lot of ground in 100 picks; 2) Not many people in fandom are that aware of the history of Japanese cinema (the new stuff is pretty well known but go earlier than 1990s and only Kurosawa is a household name) and it's super fascinating and weird and varied; 3) I get to explain what pinku eiga is and why such a genre exists and that's going to be a lot of fun.
All lists are subjective and I'll try to keep a balance betwen the "100 Japanese Films Zau Loves Whether They Are Good Or Bad" list in my head and the ideal "100 Japanese Films Zau Considers Relevant And That Everyone Should Watch". The post will not be reviews of the films but rather my personal take on how I experience these films - and that will include random trivia and unlikely connection. Also there will be a lot of appreciation of Tadanobu Asano's face, just so you know. There also will be a chance of me offending someone with my picks, and why these 100 films and not these other 100 and why do you include all of Satoshi Kon's films but not all of Ghibli's and such questions that might arise. Some of the answers to these might be belligerent (ie. because Ponyo sucks balls) but it's all in good fun, I'm not saying I have the truth, but I talk about stuff in this way, I'm not trying to convice anyone of anything (though seriously, guys, Ponyo sucks balls XD). That said, I APOLOGIZE PREEMPTIVELY if anything I say offends you. I'm totally open to criticism and if you think some of my choices are shit I'm glad to have you say so as long as you don't get personal (Ponyo sucks balls but I'm not saying that any of you who love Ponyo suck balls personally as individuals). I do love a good film criticism fight.
Also, about WARNINGS: many of the movies I'll talk about contain depictions of graphic violence and graphic sex, and some times -if I'm talking about such a film as Visitor Q for example- the films I talk about contain incest and some times -if we are talking about something like Rashomon- they will contain rape. I will WARN of all of these, specially in case someone decides to check out the movie themselves. Obviously I will not warn about gay themes because nobody should warn about that.
Ultimately I hope that, between my deranged ranting and my delusions of academic grandeur (what do you mean I should not be working at Midnight Eye? Of couse I should!) some of you might get curious and check out some of the films I talk about. I mean, THERE ARE 100 OF THEM. At least one of them would be to your taste, hopefully.
we went to see Damsels in distress at the BFI the other week (the film, by the way, AMAZING, watch it if you can), directed by the almost-forgotten Whit Stillman, who was one of those awesome filmmakers from the 90s who made personal, different films that were really formative in my ideas and FEELS about cinema. So here, have a list of my very personal pick of almost-forgotten indie movies from the 90s.

because other people make lists about films or records, i make lists about fanfic.
all in all 2009 has been a pretty good year for fic (nothing compared to the heyday of naruto/prince of tennis circa 2004, but well) even if i stopped reading for some of my favourite fandoms (i read almost no doctor who fic and lost almost all interest in battlestar galactica).
it has been a good year for bones fic and there was a little harry potter revival with the movie coming out. and there was the outpour of merlin stories. and despite my feelings about canon, there have been good stuff in that direction. reborn! fic wasn't as strong as in 2008 but still enough to satisfy me.
on the negative side of the fannish year, NOT!star trek happened and ate fandom and WHY OH WHY. epic fail of the year.
so here's the list of the fic i've enjoyed most in 2009. it might sound a bit like nepotism that so many of my chosen authors are in my flist but hey, i surround myself with really cool people, you know.
( TOP TWENTY FAVOURITE FANFICS OF 2009. fandoms featured: Heroes, Lost, Merlin, Disney RPF, The Devil's Whore, Band of Brothers, Prince of Tennis, Doctor Who, Stargate: Atlantis, Football RPF, How I Met Your Mother, Buffy, Supernatural, Harry Potter, Law & Order UK, Fullmetal Alchemist, Reborn!, Torchwood, Naruto and Bones. WARNINGS for much SQUEEage and Zau being a PATHETIC FANGIRL. )

today i spent an obscene amount of time looking for Detective Conan fanart (seeing as i have already gone through all the interesting fanfic or so it seems) and i thought i'd make a post with my best findings, for my own reference as much as my flist's enjoyment -if anyone would be interested, that is- so take a look, if you like to stare at pretty art for hours to no end.

I have decided that my plan should be spamm you about the real Star Trek until you forget that blasphemy JJ Abrams came up with. That should work. Well, it won't (people are so easily distracted by the prettiness of Zachary Quinto and Chris Pine -who is, actually, very ugly) but at least I'll have fun revisiting.
I was going to picspam "The Undiscovered Country" because it's my favourite old-skool Trek movie (& because the Remastered Edition looks so pretty; not intrusive like I thought, like the idiotic Star Wars new editions, just very pretty and with a very clean colour balance) but who am I kidding, of course I have to start with The Next Generation.
This post is dedicated to
hamsterfactor, because without her I doubt I'd be the Trekkie I am now. That sounded like an accusation, but I'm actually very grateful. What would I do without the crew of the Enterprise-D?
( FIFTEEN REASONS WHY THE NEXT GENERATION ROCKS MY SOCKS AND SO SHOULD YOURS, AND WHY IT'S THE BEST INCARNATION OF THE WHOLE FRANCHISE BY FAR - AKA THIS IS IN NO WAY AN OBJECTIVE LIST, JUST FIFTEEN THINGS ZAU LOVES BEST ABOUT HER SHOW )

This meme is kinda old and mostly very easy to crack in my case (I am very vocal about my fave characters/pairings) but anyway, I saw this in my flist and why not?
A. Post a list of up to 20 books/movies/anime/TV shows/video games/etc. that you've had an obsessive fannish love of at some time in your life.
B. Have your flist guess your favorite CHARACTER and/or PAIRING from each item.
( let the guessing begin )
also, we've just watched an couple of episodes of Conan where there was flashbacks and there was mini!Shinichi and mini!Ran and mini!Kaitou and there was shaved!Shinichi's dad and Kaitou's dad (on whom I have a crush) and Shinichi's parents and Ran's being all neighbour-ly and awesome and there was YOUNG!KOGORO still working with the police (be still my heart) and his wife fixing his tie before leaving for work and OH THE PAIN IN MY HEART. Conan is made of everything that's good and awesome in this world. *sigh*
plus, can I have the Bones finale NAO?
and, I want to see Angels & Demons so badly it HURTS. we were browsing the official companion at a bookstore today and there were pics of TOM HANKS BEING HOT AND ALL ROBERT LANGDON-ISH and explaining things and being ridiculous and BEING SEXY and I just want my bad movie right now. I want it more than anything in this world right now.
Good Night.

oh my, this is like the best series ever. why are the episodes so short?
this one might be the crackiest yet - the sweet story of true love and indulging your wife's weird sexual perversion. awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.
and my OTP had like two moments of interaction, so yay me.
i hope this develops into a whole new GENRE of anime and we see the brith of many series on the theme of "old people with glasses are hot".
ps. now we're off to see the Star Trek movie. pray for us. i know that i will loathe it no matter what because of WTF UHURA NO NO NO and the HOW DARE THEY? factor. but mainly the retarded idea of giving Uhura personality and the other thing... ugh.

Once upon a time, when I had this vain dream of becoming a film director and despite admiring many, many other filmmakers, deep down, what I wanted to be or rather who I wanted to be was Hal Hartley. I still remember meeting him like one of those few truly movie-like moments that I've had in real life (in short, there was heavy rain and i needed a place to wait it over and i stepped into the first café within walking distance and Hal Hartley and wife were sitting on a table; needless to say i embarrassed myself beyond redemption).
Surviving Desire was the only film of his I couldn't see in its day (its day being the all-inclusive retrospective that my hometown film festival held & that pretty much changed my life). I finally snagged a copy on the net last night and I got up early and watched it. It's now probably my favourite work of his. It'a about love and infatuation (infatuation... is such a wonderful word) and books and the love for books and philosophy. and chance. and all the things that usually make up a Hal Hartley movie.
It is also kind of a musical. But not really. But yes really.
Cinema (& life in general) doesn't get any better than early!Hal Hartley. Also, Martin Donovan is one of the MOST BEAUTIFUL human beings that have ever existed.

( The Problem With Us Americans Is That We Always Want A Tragedy With A Happy Ending - further proof that Martin Donovan is fucking gorgeous )
If you don't agree that Hartley writes the best dialogue in the history of cinema, you have no heart or soul.
ps. I also love my new David Gordon Green icon a lot.

`No.´
`Yes, you are.´
`Henry, I'm an atheist.´

this is possibly the craziest picspam ever. but seriously, OTP is OTP and also I'm becoming obssessed with Ben Daniels and his prettiness (seriously, why anybody would pay attention to Jamie Bamber in a show where there's Ben Daniels is beyond me). Also, James Steel is like the most amazing character I've seen in ages. His Mulder-ish character trains go straight to my hormones, damnit.
I really love doing these picspams, truth be told. so here we go.
WARNING: This picspam might cause James/Alesha shippiness. Hell, the episode itself will turn you into a shipper or else you have no heart...

hamsterfactor decided to watch the episode with me. i think it was rather like a sociological experiment, she watched me FLAIL FLAIL FLAIL between amused and appalled XD Hey, at least she told me she thinks Ben Daniels is hot, so there you go.
Totally unrelated but I posted The Office US fic recs last night. Check them out for good literature. You won't be dissapointed.

On a non-OTP note, I'm glad they gave Harriet Walter more to do this week. It's a shame to waste her like that. LESS BAMBER AND MORE OF HER, PLZ.

so okay guys, here's the deal: Law & Order: UK was pretty amazing last week. actually it was very good. not the coppers part cause that continues to be boring, though Bradley Walsh's character is growing on me. but the trial part was quite brilliant. also, James and Alesha are so doing. I'm enjoying how pathetic Matt is around Alesha when she is clearly very much in love with her boss. and her boss with her. TAKE THAT, STUPID JAMIE BAMBER!
also VERY IMPORTANT: I am beginning to think that my Freema is actually a good actress. I don't think this was evident before this ep. I feel that all the hopes I had for her are being realized slowly. like, she was very VERY good in this ep.
PICSPAM to prove that shipping is serious bussiness.
( also that Ben & Freema are fucking beautiful. also, doing it. on and off screen. )
EPISODE THREE RECAP SOON TO FOLLOW. it wasn't as shippy but it was very good too.
Conclusions:
1. This show is actually a bit good.
2. James & Alesha: So doing it.
3. Can we lose the first half of each episode?
4. Can it be Monday nao?

you know how i think these things suck, okay? but what the hell,
Also! Hugh Dancy was the cover of the Evening Standard Magazine. The interview was so-so cause Hugh has the tendency to appear as a cunt in interviews -when he is actually a very sweet guy, as we were able to check in person. The interviewer didn't seem to like him too much (same thing with James McAvoy the other week, uhm; btw, we are going to a Masterclass with Mr.McAvoy, lol). But it's quite interesting. Anyway, for the Hugh Dancy fans in my flist (the two of them or so). Enjoy the scans.

Give me a pairing and I'll write about their first kiss in 100 or so words. Crossovers and RPF welcomed.
